Text: Proverbs 18:21 (NKJV)

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.”

Key Thought: There is power in words. One of the greatest weapons in the life of a believer in Christ is the tongue – the spoken words.

God created the earth by the power of spoken words. Jesus did exploits during His earthly ministry by the power of words. He raised the dead and healed the sick by the power of the tongue. God made us in His own image, therefore our words carry power. God created the tongue for important functions. It can speak good or bad.

Our words can give hope, bring solutions and comfort, and they can also bring discouragement or pain. The tongue is so powerful that it can bless or hunt even the speaker. It is a double-edged sword.

Let’s tell ourselves the truth: we have a problem with our choice of words. Sometimes our words are pressure-prompted. It is very important to choose our words especially when we are angry and when the situation is not favourable. Speaking the words of faith will save us. Speaking words of fear will destroy. The lesson is simple; the consequences are great.

Let’s see what the Bible says about the power of the tongue:

Proverbs 10:20 (NLT) “The words of the godly are like sterling silver; the heart of a fool is worthless.”

Matthew 12:36 (NLT) “And I tell you this, you must give an account on judgment day for every idle word you speak.”

Proverbs 16:24 (NLT) “Kind words are like honey—sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.”

Matthew 15:18 (NLT) “But the words you speak come from the heart—that’s what defiles you.”

Matthew 12:37(NKJV) “For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

James 1:26 (ERV) “You might think you are a very religious person. But if your tongue is out of control, you are fooling yourself. Your careless talk makes your offerings to God worthless.”

James 3:8-10 (NKJV) “But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.”

Beloved child of God, the Bible is clear about the use of the tongue. Today, nations of the world are in turmoil. The covid-19 pandemic ravages the nations of the world while the Russia-Ukraine war is causing colossal loss of lives and properties and a global rise in the cost of living, yet we have a great opportunity to use our words to shape our world. Our words can feed faith or feed fear. Let’s use our tongue to speak God’s word to our current situation (not the words of the media).

If you are a child of God (John 1:12), choose your words. If you are not yet His child (by accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and personal Saviour), I invite you to do so NOW while it is not late. Tomorrow may be too late. Isaiah 55:6 says, “Seek the LORD while He may be found, Call upon Him while He is near.”

Believer’s Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for creating me in Your image and likeness. Thank You for the power of the tongue. Please help me to use my tongue according to Your will. It is in Jesus Christ’s precious name I pray with thanksgiving. Amen!
