When God created us, he gave us glorious destinies to show his goodness (See Ephesians 1:11-12). However, the devil is always on the prowl to destroy such destinies and it’s pitiful that he sometimes succeeds.

The destinies of so many amazing individuals have been cut short or replaced with evil. To do this, the devil uses several means. The Bible encourages us to not be ignorant of the devices of our enemy, so we must identify his evil instruments and how to combat them.

What are Comfort Zones?

One instrument the devil uses is the comfort zone. A comfort zone is a state of mind people are familiar with and are at ease. It is a place of temporary comfort and, as time goes on, permanent regret.

A person living in a comfort zone wishes life would remain the way it presently is and never change in any way. He/she compares himself with others and gets a feeling of, “at least I’m better than Mr XYZ and Mrs ABC,” not knowing that their life assignment and destination are not the same as others.

As harmless as they seem, comfort zones are highly destructive. Perhaps the worst thing about this mindset is that for as long as it’s there, one’s potential will only remain that—a potential—never to be actualised. The devil uses it to distract, delay and destroy a person’s God-ordained destiny.

The comfort zone lies to you that you can’t be more than you currently are and even backs it up with facts. It tells that you can’t change your bad habits and that you don’t have enough to accomplish your goal. Like someone said, “The comfort zone is a beautiful place, but nothing ever grows there.”

How to Identify if You are Living in Your Comfort Zones

  • The best way to know if you’re living in the desert area of comfort zones is if you’re averse to changes, challenges, new experiences or new ideas and places. Imagine who would have ever heard of Abraham if he chose to stay in Haran instead of following God’s orders because that’s where he’s familiar with. Yes, you guessed right: absolutely nobody.
  • Esther would have been a part of the backdrop of Hebrew history if she didn’t step outside of what she’s known all her life to participate in pageantry that would alter her life and that of her people for life. Our Lord Jesus could have chosen to not be crucified; it would have been in his right to do so, but he endured the cross to obtain eternal glorification.
  • When you live in your comfort zone, you take the advice to return to your vomit, thereby becoming forgotten like Orpah after she agreed to return to her gods and the people of Moab.

The Solution

As bad as comfort zones are, there’s something good about it. The good thing is, the same way you walked into it, you can walk out of it. No matter how ingrained into your system comfort zones are, you can fight and overcome them.

If you’ve read this far and could relate to this piece, your next question might be, “How do I get out of my comfort zone?” Don’t despair because there’s a solution. The solution is believing in Jesus and in his power to save you from harmful comfort zones.
